Abstract

Teak Tectona grandis Linn. f. is a most valuable hardwood in the wood-based industries. The beauty of the wood and its outstanding properties have been well documented and sought after. However teak stem borers particularly the teak beehole borer Xyleutes ceramica Walker has been recorded to be the most serious pest of teak in Myanmar Thailand and the Philippines. Although teak planting in Sabah Malaysia is a relatively new venture with only about 2 363 ha so far the pest has been recorded as the major threat. The available biological and ecological information on teak beehole borer is mostly from Thailand and Myanmar. Such information has to be obtained from other countries such as Sabah which has different climatic and geographical conditions and where teak is an exotic species. Studies on the bioecology of the teak beehole borer at Luasong Forestry Centre started in early October 1997. In this paper we discuss some preliminary observations and the present status of infestation in Sabah. Potential management strategies are also mentioned.
