Abstract

The teak skeletoniser Paliga damastesalis Walker Lepidoptera: Crambidae is a key pest of young teak plantations in Malaysia. Defoliation of as high as 100 may occur during outbreaks. Attempts were made to find environmentally friendly control measures for the skeletoniser. Screening tests were carried out in the laboratory on some Bt isolates and extracts of sentang Azadirachta exclesa Jacks Jacobs. Results showed that a mutant Bt isolate from a commercial Bt subspecies aizawai was more effective in controlling the skeletoniser compared to other Bt isolates whilst sentang extracts were found to inhibit the feeding behaviour of the skeletoniser.
