Abstract

The spatial and temporal distribution of agromyzid leafminers and their parasitoids were studied on sugar peas Pisum sativum saccharatum with the aim offorrnulating an integrated pest management programme. The major leafminer species in the early stages until flowering i.e. until 8 weeks after planting was Liriomyza huidobrensis after which Chromatomyia horticola became the dominant species. The major parasitoids were Chrysocharis pentheus and Opius spp throughout the crop cycle. Another parasitoid Hemiptarsenus varicornis was found in low numbers before flowering but increased after that period. Three distinct zones of infestation by leafminers were ascertained. They were the feeding and oviposition zone upper stratum the larval development zone midle stratum and the late instar and pupal development zone lower stratum.
