Abstract

Various symptoms of damage on fruit skin of citrus are becoming remarkably important during recent years in the Mekong Delta one of Vietnam major growing citrus areas. This makes fruits less attractive to customers and decreases marketable value. Red mites Panonychus citri Mc Gregor cause the most common symptom called rice-bran skin Da cam while yellow mites Phyllocoptruta oleivora Ashmead cause brownish skin Da lu. Two unidentified species of thrips were also recorded to attack the very young fruits causing circular wounds which enlarge as the fruit develops. Some pesticides and miticides were tested in laboratory and greenhouse conditions and in farmers; orchards to evaluate possibilities to control these symptoms. Experiments with different levels of N P and K to verify the effect of fertilizers on the skin damage showed no positive correlation between any level of diammonium phosphate DAP fertilizer and the percentage of damage index. With high levels of nitrogen and low phosphate and potassium levels however the damage index was highest in the orange.
