Abstract

A practical quick and reliable inoculation technique for testing the pathogenicity of G. boninense was developed using rubber wood block as substrate for the inoculum on seedlings and young palms in the field. 100 success in establishment of the disease was achieved on the seedlings and young palms two and nine months after inoculation respectively. The intensity of foliar symptoms and the presence of basidioma were correlated to disease severity in the roots and bole of infected palms. The present study showed that contact between inoculum and root system was critical for a successful and fast establishment of BSR rather than inoculum mass. This technique could be adopted for disease screening trials.
