Abstract

In most countries of South East Asia traditional wood supplies from natural forests have been diminishing. Part of the shortfall in timber supplies is being met by the planting of trees which can be harvested after 10-15 years or even earlier. In many situations tree species originating in Australia and Papua New Guinea primarily species of Eucalyptus Acacia and Casuarina have been found to perform well especially on poor sites where nutrient levels are low and competition from introduced grasses or weeds is intense. The broad-scale planting of these species has been accompanied by the emergence of several disease problems which have the potential to reduce plantation productivity and the value of timber products. In this paper pathogen threats to these plantation species are identified and some options for management are discussed.
