Abstract

Yield forecasting is one ofthe major activities in oil palm plantation management and planning. The crop yield forecast is use as a guide in the budget estimation logistic scheduling manpower planning and forward selling decisions. Crop forecasting using remote sensing technology has been explored in many annual crops such as barley corn wheat and soybean since the early 80;s in United States using the Landsat Program. The technique was proven to give a reliable crop estimates with an accuracy of more than 90. In view of this development a project to forecast oil palm fresh fruit bunch FFB yield using remote sensing was carried out at Carey Island Selangor. This project is a bilateral collaboration between Malaysian Remote Sensing Agency and Sime Darby RD Centre. After four years of research the collaboration has successfully developed a yield forecasting technique for oil palm using remote sensing and Geographical Information System GIS technologies. The technique was developed using archived remote sensing images and yield records to establish a site specific FFB yield forecasting model. The system was then tested for six 6 years of production data from 2002 to 2008 and consistently forecasts the FFB yield at accuracy of more than 95. This indicates that remote sensing technology has apotential to accurately predict oil palm yield.
