Abstract

Amongst the common species of fruit flies in Brunei are Bactrocera occiptalis B. carambolae and B. papayae in that order of importance. Research indicates that B. occiptalis is highly polyphagous and is the major fruit fly pest here infesting carambola ciku guava kasturi lime honey lime mango banana Terminalia catappa and Garcinia hombrioniana. On the other hand B. carambolae infests mango and T catappa. while B papayae infests mango. Infestation rates offruits by fruit flies all species considered varied: e.g. mangoes 20 to 73 carambola 14 and T. catappa 62. Infestation ofsame fruits by two species had been observed: ego B. occiptalis and B. carambolae in T catappa B. carambolae and B. papayae in mango. Low parasitism of B. occipitalis by Fopius vandenboschi was recorded from carambola only. However B. carambolae the dominant fruit fly pest of carambola in West Malaysia has not been recorded from carambola here yet.
