Abstract

Sentang is an indigenous forest tree species that was recently introduced as a plantation species to overcome the anticipated shortage of timber in the future. Since sentang has never been planted in monoculture a study was conducted to determine the diseases and disorders as well as other related factors which could hinder the large-scale cultivation of this species. Disease surveys were conducted in several states of Peninsular Malaysia. Preliminary results revealed that among the common symptoms observedon sentang are those of rootrot multiple branching dieback and curled leaves. Of these rootrot is the most serious. Fungi are the primary cause of most of the diseases and their occurrence are mainly related to poor drainage site history and site preparation. Curled leaves could be caused by insect transmitted virus while multiple branching phenomenon could be caused by various interacting factors such as soil type genotype and also insects.
