Abstract

The oil palm E. guineensis and rubber Hevea brasiliensis are two very important plantation crops in Malaysia. Both are susceptible to root diseases caused by species of Ganoderma namely basal stem rot caused by G. boninese in oil palms and red root rot caused by G. philippi in rubber. Sentang Azadirachta excelsa is an indigenous timber tree that has been identified as suitable for large scale plantation of forest species to meet future log demands. For growers to undertake large scale monoculture of sentang prior knowledge of the susceptibility potential of the crops to certain diseases is essential so that disease outbreaks could be checked in time. This study investigates the pathogenicity and cross pathogenicity of sentang to both G. philippi and G. boninense and similarly for oil palms. Results showed that sentang was susceptible to red rot but was not infected at all by G. boninense. Similarly oil palms were infected by G. boninense but were not infected at all by G. philippi. Based on the studies above it appears that G. boninese may be specific on palmaceous hosts and G. philippi may be specific to woody hosts but further large studies will have to be carried out. From the viewpoint of practicability this study implies that sentang may be planted in ex-oil palm plantation with a very low risk of getting infected by G. boninense. However if planted on woody crop plantations such as rubber cocoa and tea the risk of infection by G. philippi may be very high.
