Abstract

The mahogany shoot borer Hypsipyla spp. caused severe damage to one-year old Swietenia grown in an oil palm and rubber plantation in Kelantan Malaysia. Over a 4-month period 94 of trees suffered shoot borer damage and attacks were continuous. The attacks on trees were random and the intensity of attack followed the flushing of new shoots. 89 of trees with new shoots were attacked within 12 days. Hypsipyla caterpillars can damage more than one shoot on a tree. Damaged shoots usually succumb to die-back and result in severe set back to tree growth.
