Abstract

In 1997 and 1998 about 500 fruit farmers cultivating citrus longan mango or durian were interviewed about their orchard management. Fungicide use ranges between 48 for sweet orange and 90 for Tieu mandarin. About 14 and 34 of the farmers apply herbicides in durian and longan respectively. Nearly all insecticides used are extremely toxic to toxic for fish bees and beneficial insects WHO toxicity classes I or II. Number of insecticides used has nearly increased by 200 compared to 1995/996. These days percentage farmers using insecticides ranges between 84 for sweet orange Citrus sinensis and 98 for longan Dimocarpus longan with a maximum number of 48 applications per season. In citrus the highest number of pesticide products and applications occur in Tieu mandarin c. reticulata. However more applications with banned or restricted pesticides as methyl parathion monocrotophos Azodrin and methamidophos Monitor are being used in sweet orange. Up to 68 of longan farmers still apply monocrotophos. The government has only recently banned the restricted pesticides monocrotophos and methamidophos in October 1998. Implementation however becomes more urgent.
