Abstract

Knowing that smallholders constitute 40 of Malaysian palm oil by area planted and 33 of this comes from FELDA schemes Felda has a pivotal role to play in the sustainable palm oil production in Malaysia. This paper discusses FELDA;s approach in the implementation of the RSPO;s Principles and Criteria especially in the coordination amongst the many subsidiaries within FELDA group of companies that looks into a specific area e.g. smallholders replanting plantation operations milling and agricultural services but are involved collectively in the initiative to produce sustainable palm oil. The difficulties encountered in this exercise and key areas of concern are also discussed before concluding with the experience gained and lessons learned During the course FELDA;s involvement in RSPO and the Malaysian working groups were highlighted especially in the setting up of the guidelines national interpretations and creating awareness to the smallholders in general.
