Abstract

Experiments to investigate different colchicine treatments were carried out on haploid oil palms in an attempt to produce doubled haploids DHs. Roots of haploid seedlings were treated with a range of colchicine concentrations and exposure times. The subsequent newly emerged leaves were sampled for ploidy analysis. The effect of additional wetting agents and plant hormones were also examined. Most of the treatments resulted in various frequencies of doubled cells and low mortality rate. The addition of plant hormones gibberellic acid GA3 was found to be beneficial and resulted in up to 100 of doubled cells in some cases. The importance of these findings for future oil palm breeding is discussed
