Abstract

Taking advantage of oil palms Elaeis guineensis Jacq. with different ploidy levels that are at our disposal the size and frequency of stomata on leaf surfaces were evaluated as an indirect method for determining ploidy level in oil palm. The study was conducted on haploid diploid triploid and tetraploid palms. Oil palm with low ploidy level was found to have a high stomatal density and vice versa. Meanwhile the size of stomata was found to be positively correlated with oil palm ploidy level and thus can be used as a method for ploidy determination. The ploidy level of all samples used in this study was confirmed by flow cytometry and chromosome counts. Genotype interestingly was also found to be an influential factor to stomatal size and density but did not affect the correlation among ploidy levels.
