Abstract

Brucea javanica L. Merr. Simaroubaceae commonly known as lada pahit or Ya-Dan-Zi produces fruits and seeds which have long been used as a traditional remedy for the treatment of dysentery and malaria. In Malaysia the seeds are used for the treatment of diabetes. The present study was undertaken to investigate the hypoglycemic activity of the methanolic extract of B. javanica seeds in normoglycaemic mice. The methanolic dose of 2 32 128 and 1280 mg/Kg body weight of mouse were administered orally to the normoglycaemia mice n 10. Highest percentage glucose reduction of 41.1 was observed when the normoglycaemia mice were administered orally with 32 mg/Kg body weight of methanolic extract.
