Abstract

The production of tomato under lowland greenhouse in the hot and humid tropics experiences problem of poor fruit set due to high temperature inhibition effects and poor pollination. An experiment was carried out in a greenhouse at MARDI Serdang from April 2008 to September 2008 to determine the effects of five pollination techniques on fruit set of tomato var. Baccarat. The treatments are plant growth bioregulators 4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid 4-CPA combination of 4-CPA with Gibberellic Acid GA3 hand vibration. electrical vibration and control natural pollination. The pollination techniques were applied on tomato inflorescence at flower bloom. Fruit set of tomato inflorescences was 85.3 90.4 71.6 74.8 and 39.2 for 4-CPA 4-CPAGA3 hand vibration electrical vibration and the control respectively. The combination of 4-CPA and GA3 at 20 ppm showed the highest fruit set and was significantly higher than other treatments except for 4-CPA treatment. The hand and electrical vibration showed no significant differences. The average fruit weight per inflorescences was 256.9 264.7 198.6 189.4 and 78.3 gram for 4-CPA 4-CPA GA3. hand vibration electrical vibration and the control respectively. The study demonstrated that the best pollination technique was the combination of 4 CPA and GA3 at 20 ppm as it induced the highest inflorescences fruit set and fruit weight of tomato.
