Abstract

Stomata number and pattern was observed on peel of red-fleshed dragon fruit at every 5 days interval duringjruit development starting from day 5 until 35 days after pollination DAP. Observations on guard cells lising scanning electron microscope SEM showed that the stomata of red-fleshed dragon fruit distributed randomly and diffuse on the surface of peel. The guard cells of stomata were associated with subsidiary cells. The stomata number per area mm2 of red-fleshed dragon fruit peel which was determined by imprints showed that there was significant difference in number as DAP increased. As DAP progressed from day 5 to 10 an increase of 25 in stomata number occurred. However the number of stomata decreased tremendously to about 78 stomata per areamm2 when fruit developed from day 10 to 15. The stomata numbers continue to decrease significantly as fruit developed. There was no significant difference in number ofstomata when peel started to turn red colour at day 25 and the peel turned full red 4-5 days after the first colour change.
