Abstract

The antioxidant properties of two plants which grow in Iran Borago officinalis L. and Citrus auranteum were tested using free-radical scavenging test. The amount of the total phenolic andflavonoid compounds were also determined. The extracts from B. officinalis L. flower and C. aurantium bloom were obtained by hydrolyses extraction method. The total phenolic content of the extract was determined colorimetrically using the Folin-Ciocalteu method. The total phenolic content in B. officinalis L. flower and C. aurantium bloom extracts were 2.75 0.04 and 3.54 0.03 mg gallic acid equivalentlg dried weight. respectively. The antioxidant activities were evaluated by determination oftotal flavonoid compounds and 2 2-diphenyl-l picrylhydrazyl DPPH test. The amount of total flavonoid was measured spectrophotometrically using the aluminium chloride colorimetric assay. Total flavonoid in B. officinalis L. flower and C. aurantium extracts were 3.55 0.05 and 3.840.11 mg rutin equivalentlg dried weight respectively. Additionally the DPPH result showed the highest antioxidant activity at concentration of 300Jlglml crode methanolic extracts with 32.27for B. officinalis L. and 41. 13 for C. aurantium; whilst the lowest DPPH was obtained at concentration of 100Jlglmi with respective values of 16.40 and 24.62 for B. officinalis L. and C. aurantium. It was concluded that these plants have good antioxidant contents thus they have the potential to be applied in pharmaceutical products and food supplement. However further research is required to establish other medicinal properties and their profiling within the plant parts.
