Abstract

The ability of paclobutrazol and flurprimidol to reduce Curcuma roscoeana height and its effect on leaf flower and other quality characteristics which render it suitable as a flowering potted plant were investigated. Experiment 1 was conducted applying 200ml of paclobutrazol as a drench at 0 10 20 30 and 40 ppm to pot-grown seedlings of 4 weeks old. Experiment 2 was conducted applying 200ml of flurprimidol as a drench at 0 10 20 30 and 40 ppm to pot-grown seedlings of 4 weeks old. The results obtained suggested that both paclobutrazol and flurprimidol could well be used to control the growth of Curcuma roscoeana and improve its commercial quality. All the drench applications of both paclobutrazol and flurprimidol were effective in reducing plant growth and flower stalk length although the best quality plants were obtained with 10 to 20 ppm of each growth retardant. Both paclobutrazol and flurprimidol produced slightly darker foliage smaller leaves compared to the control and higher concentrations 40 ppm of paclobutrazol 30 and 40 ppm of flurprimidol curling the leaves. Even though the leaf colours of the treated plants were darker both growth retardants resulted in slightly decreased chlorophyll content and photosynthesis rate compared to the control. However all levels of paclobutrazol and flurprimidol had no effect on the number of leaves produced. Paclobutrazol and flurprimidol treated plants produced flowers slightly earlier than ofthe control.
