Nurul Munira Y., . and Radzali M., . (2004) Production of monoterpenes from Michelia champaca cempaka kuning essential oils and their antioxidant activity. [Proceedings Paper]
Abstract
Fresh flowers and leaves of M.champaca were separately extracted with appropriate amount of dichloromethane and n-pentane by using the simultaneous distillation extraction SDE technique in order to obtain their essential oils. The results showed that both samples extracted in dichloromethane gives the highest yield of essential oil compared to n-pentane. The essential oil compounds were then analyzed by using the gas chromatography with flame ionization detection GCFID technique. Terpeniol and linalool were detected to be the major compounds of leaf essential oil while 1 8-cineole and geraniol were the major compounds in the flower essential oil. 1 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazil DPPH scavenging activity and conjugated diene test were actually used to measure the antioxidant activity of each extract at 20 mg/ml w/v of concentration. In both tests young leaves of M. champaca extracted with dichloromethane showed the highest antioxidant properties compared to other samples.
