Abstract

Continuing our interest in Rubiaceous plants this paper reports on the antioxidant screening of nine species of Malaysian Rubiaceae comprising four genera. Employing a chemotaxonomic approach the species selected include plants from the subfamily Rubioideae; two species of Hedyotis three species of Lasianthus two species of Ophiorrhiza and two species of Psychotria. The ferric thiocyanate FTC and the thiobarbituric acid TBA methods were employed. In measuring the inhibition of lipid peroxidation all tested extracts showed strong antioxidant potential when compared to quercetin and vitamin E with percent inhibition of 96-99 in FTC and 80-96 in TBA.
