Abstract

This study reports the in vitro screening of 144 marine sponges Porifera collected off Terengganu Islands namely Pulau Bidong Pulau Kapas Pulau Perhentian and Pulau Redang. In the search for novel phannaceuticals methanol extracts were tested for anticancer activity by using HL60 human caucasian promyelocytic leukemia cell line and MCF-7 human breast cancer cell line. Twenty specimens demonstrated high toxicity activity against HL60 with IC50 ranging from 1.20 g g/mL to 10 g/mL meanwhile twenty five specimens showing moderate to weakly toxicity activity lC50 10.2 g g/mL to 20 g g/mL. For assay against MCF-7 eighteen specimens exhibited high toxicity activity with IC50 ranging from 1.5 -8.05 g g/mL and twenty two other specimens showing moderate to weakly toxicity activity with IC50 ranging from 10.5 -29.2 g g/mL. Fourteen specimens exhibited good cytotoxic activity against both cell lines. The extracts which showed good cytotoxic activity are undergoing further analysis to identify the specimens as well as identifying the active constituents.
