Abstract

Uncaria a genus belonging to the family of Rubiaceae is widely distributed in tropical Asia Africa and America. this genus is of considerable ethnobotanic significance in malaysia where a number of uncaria species are used in traditional medicine for the treatment of a variety of diseases. in this paper we report the antimicrobial activites of the methanolic extracts leaves and vines of five malaysian uncaria species including U. lucida U. acida U. cordata var cordata U. calophylla and U. longifolia var pteropoda. The antimicrobial activities were evaluated by the hole-plate diffusion method. U. longiflora leaves U. acida leaves and U. calophylla vines exhibited the biggest inhibition zones which are comparable to chloramphenicol and cyclohexamide the positive controls for the bacteria and fungi respectively. All three species displayed a wide spectrum of antimicrobial activity.
