Abstract

The hypoglycaemic activity of the Pithecellobium jiringa seed powder was studied in glucose loaded and alloxan-induced diabetic rats. Diabetic rats received by gavage P jiringa seed powder 100 mg kg- body weight every day for 2 weeks after the induction of diabetes. The normal control and diabetic control rats were treated with distilled water only. The results indicated that P. jiringa seed powder failed to show hypoglycaemic effect in diabetic rats. When challenged with sucrose 3 g kg- body weight diabetic rats treated with P. jiringa seed powder did not show any effect on the absorption of sugar. However diabetic rats treated with P. jiringa seed powder improved their body weight compared to diabetic control. In conclusion short term treatment of diabetes with P. jiringa seed powder improved body weight but not blood glucose level in alloxan-induced diabetic rats.
