Abstract

Leucaena leucocephala Lam. de Wit or locally known as ;petai belalang; is a free-seeding colonizing plant which has spread to a very wide range of sites and can be found commonly throughout Malaysia. Traditional practitioners used its leaves and pods for diabetic disease and a decoction of roots and barks is taken as contraceptive ecbolic depilatory or emmenagogue. In the current study the ethanolic extracts of Leucaena leucocephala barks and leaves were tested for their hypoglycaemic activity. Control and alloxan induced diabetic rats were treated orally either with vehicle Leucaena leucocephala leaf and bark ethanolic extracts once daily for three weeks respectively. Daily administration of Leucaena leucocephala significantly reduced the blood glucose level p 0.001. The results also showed that alloxan caused body weight reduction significantly p 0.001 which is stabilized by the ethanolic extract of Leucaena leucocephala. The observed results indicate that Leucaena leucocephala bark and leaf ethanolic extracts possess hypoglycaemic effect.
