Abstract

Phosphoglucomutase PGM EC 5.4.2.2 which catalyzes the interconversion of glucose 1- and glucose 6-phosphate is one of the enzymes that may be involved in the maintenance of equilibrium concentrations of relevant sugars at the hexose monophosphate HMP junction. This HMP junction which include also the interconversion of fructose-6-phosphate and glucose-6-phosphate represents important points in the metabolic pathways of cellular carbohydrates and other cellular components. We have isolated and partially sequenced a cDNA clone encoding cytosolic phosphoglucomutase from the library of ripening chilli Capsicum annuum L. cv MCII and designated capPGMl. This cDNA clone shows high homology at the deduced amino acid level with the cytosolic form of PGM from Solanum tuberosum 95 Arabidopsis thaliana 83 Pisum sativum 84 and cambium of poplar Populus tremula L. x P. tremuloides L. 83. Northern blot analysis seems to indicate that capPGMl was expressed throughout ripening.
