Abstract
Distribution and development of laticifers in two stages of development from two species of poppy Papavaraceae were studied by the used of optical and electron microscopy. They were Papaver rhoeas and Meconopsis argemone. Several preparation procedures have been compared and optimised for the structural preservation of the laticifers and for examination of their distribution in these two species. Laticifers in both species showed similar pattern of distribution. They were located in the cambial region of the tissue. The laticifers were observed closely associated with the vascular bundle of the tissues. Latex in both species was in the form of vacuole. The vacuoles were spherical in shape. The number of vacuoles in young plant however was observed to be less compare to the older plant where the vacuoles were numerous and closely packed. Moreover vacuoles in the younger plant were observed to contain numerous net-like structures as compare to the vacuoles in the older plant where they were all empty.
