Abstract

Coconut palm Cocos nucifera cabbage umbut is traditionally consumed by local especially Malays. The nutrient value of umbut was as good as cabbage kobis therefore suitable as fresh vegetables. It is delicious to be eat fresh ;;ulam;; or cooked for special dishes. Umbut could be produced in big quantity and continuous in the nursery. Umbut extracted from 24 months old coconut seedlings was suitable for market. Seedlings planted at 10 000 plants/ha planting distance 1.0 x 0.8 m could produce income at RM 986.67/ha per month and RM 1 490.83/ha per month at the price of fresh umbut at RM 3.00 per kg and RM 4.00 per kg respectively. Various delicious products from umbut such as jerk halua candy fruit cocktail vegetable salad snack food vacuum fried snack and could be market locally and may be exported overseas.
