Abstract

The coming years will witness the reemergence of agriculture as an important sector in the Malaysian economy as outlined in the Third National Agriculture Policy. Postharvest technology will continue to play an important role in ensuring proper development of the horticultural industry in the country both for domestic and export markets. RD activities in postharvest biology and technology of horticultural produce need to be aligned to the requirement of the industry. The major factors which steer the future RD activities in postharvest biology and technology include efficiency in production and marketing cost effectiveness and consumer preferences and demand. The major RD areas need to be emphasized include extension of storage life minimal processing insect disinfestation and transportation.
