Abstract
The activities of Peroxidase and Polyphenoloxidase increased with time of sampling in both root and leaf samples of banana seedlings when inoculated with Fusarium oxysporum f.sp.cubense FOCR4 compatible reaction with an optimum level between 12-15 days after inoculation after which followed by a gradual decrease. The reduction in activities of Peroxidase and Polyphenoloxidase is correlated to the development of foliar symptoms. Disease symptoms appeared as premature yellowing of the oldest leaves followed by necrosis and collapsed. Longitudinal and cross sections of corms and roots showed reddish brown discoloration in the vascular system which confirmed the successful colonization of FOCR4 in the host tissues. In the case of incompatible reaction when plants were inoculated with nonpathogenic F.oxysporum F04 there was a continuous increase in the inducible compounds suggesting their possible role in the defense reactions to infection. Proline as a measure of stress was higher in seedlings inoculated with FOCR4 but not in the incompatible reactions.
