Abstract

One month old banana cv. Berangan plantlets were grown in vitro in MS media solution containing different concentrations of Polyethylene glycol PEG 4000 to simulate water stress conditions. The six concentrations of PEG 4000 were 10 0.11 0.12 0.13 0.14 15. No PEG 4000 was added in the control. Six replicates were used for each treatment. Growth moisture chlorophyll protein content and activity of peroxidase were measured after four weeks of culture. The results indicated that plantlets in 10 PEG 4000 showed the highest growth rate 60 when compared to other concentrations indicating the least affected by water stress. The marked decrease of moisture 400 and chlorophyll content 444 in 15 PEG 4000 were also observed. Plantlets in 15 PEG 4000 also showed the lowest content of protein 15 mg protein g fresh weight. However the peroxidase activity was increased particularly in 15 of PEG 4000 which resulted the highest activity of peroxidase 4300 unit mg protein.
