Abstract

A quantitative study of specific leaf weight SLW under natural canopy light condition of matured mangosteen trees was studied in two locations. Specific leaf weight was determined according to the various orders of lateral branches along the canopy axis. There were significant differences in SLW among branching orders with a definite decreasing trend of leaf SLW with an increase in the lateral branching order. The order of the magnitude of SLW values was first order lateral second third order fourth order fifth order. There were significant linear trends describing distribution of SLW from the top to the base of canopy for each branch orders with a tendency for an upward increase in SLW from the first primary lateral to the subsequent laterals along the tree height. The implication of variability in SLW within the canopy position is discussed in relation to irradiance foliar nitrogen and photosynthetic capacity.
