Abstract

Filamentous fungi are known to have unique biochemical pathways to assimilate a vast array of simple and complex nutrients available to them and to produce a variety of metabolites. Morphological uniqueness of these fungi was commonly used for identification. The BIOLOG FF Microplate has been introduced for rapid identification of common filamentous fungi based on their abilities to utilize 95 discrete substrates. In this study the FF Microplate was used for substrate utilization pattern and growth of some plant fungal pathogens important to our bioherbicide discovery program. Culture growth was monitored by change in absorbance in each well and visually observed for its growth. In general we found that there were variations in the Carbon sources utilized by the fungi use in this study. Most of the fungi isolates studied preferred to use Carbon from the carbohydrates group compared to other group such as carboxylic acid and amino acids.
