Abstract

The crude extracts from the leaves of Allamanda blanchetti Allamanda oenotheraefolia Allamanda cathartica Allamanda cathartica ;Alba; and Allamanda cathartica ;Jamaican Sunset; Apocynaceae were screened for in vitro and in vivo antifungal activities against Colletotrichum gloesporioides the causal agent of anthracnose disease on papaya. All extracts resulted in the production of antifungal substances that significantly inhibited the growth of C. gloeosporioides P0.05. Antifungal activities of the petroleum ether chloroform and methanol extracts of A.cathartica ;Alba; A. cathartica ;Jamaican Sunset; and A. blanchetti gave the smallest mean of percentage inhibition of radial growth PIRG and percentage inhibition of spore germination PISG as compared to A. cathartica and A. Oenotheraefolia. Antifungal activity of the chloroform extract of A. blanchetti A. cathartica ;Alba; and A. cathartica ;Jamaican Sunset; determined by poison agar technique strongly inhibited the growth of C. gloesporioides 82-100. A total spore germination inhibition 100 was observed and proved that Allamanda possessed a fungistatic and fungicidal properties with the increase of the extract concentrations tested 0 0.001 0.003 0.005 0.7. A significantly lower disease severity and disease index was observed in Allamanda treated papaya fruits where chloroform and methanol extract of A. cathartica ;Jamaican Sunset; coated fruits showed the lowest disease index 20 and the disease severity score was 1 or 2.
