Abstract
Papaya dieback disease is an economically important disease of papaya in Malaysia and has become a major threat to the papaya industry. The main causal agent of the disease was recently reported as Erwinia mallotivora. We investigated the bacterial communities associated with advanced stage of papaya dieback disease in papaya using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The bacterial communities in the vascular tissue of papaya stem and fruit comprise of 6 genuses within 5 different families i.e Enterobacteriaceae Enterococcaceae Moraxellaceae Pseudomonadaceae and Streptococcaceae. The bacteria were identified as Pantoea agglomerans. Enterobacter asburiae. Enterobacter spp. Enterococcus sulfureus Acinetobacter spp. Pseudomonas fulva Pseudomonas spp. and Lactococcus lactis. Out of six three are known to cause diseases in plants i.e. Pantoea agglomerans Enterobacter spp. and Pseudomonas spp. The identification of microbial communities in these diseased plants may provide insight to the development of suitable control strategies to overcome the disastrous effect of the disease.
