Abstract

This study was conducted in an attempt to exploit rhizosphere actinomycetes as biocontrol agents against fungal pathogens of Hylocereus sp. A total of two hundred and fifty one putative actinomycetes were isolated from soil samples collected from dragon fruit plant field in Negeri SembiIan Malaysia. Also three pathogenic fungi were isolated from diseased dragon fruit plant;s stem namely Fusarium oxysporum Fusarium semitactum and Fusarium decemce/lulare. In the primary screening three actinomyceyte strains strongly inhibited all three fungi. Scanning Electron Microscope observations indicated that antifungal compounds released by the strains generally caused folding back of mycelium bulging and lysis of hyphae and stunted mycelium growth. Based on the morphological biochemical and phylogenetic analysis three isolates were identified as Streptomyces ma/aysiensis C17 Streptomyces cavourensis subsp. cavourensis C68 and Streptomyces sanyensis K98. Phytotoxicity test indicated that strain C17 and C68 were toxic towards maize seedlings while strain K98 promoted the growth of maize seedlings. To our knowledge this is the first report on fungitoxicity of these three strains of actinomycetes.
