Abstract

Survival of melanised and non-melanised isolates of Cryptococcus neoformans in the gut of four species of earthworms was studied by feeding the fungus to the earthworms. Recovery of C. neoformans from the guts was possible only when the isolates were used for feeding in melanised state. In the light of these findings we presume that earthworms could have influenced the evolution of melanin production a key parasitic adaptation in Cryptococcus neoformans.
