Abstract

Isolation of heterocyclic hydrocarbon degrading bacteria from seawater samples collected from Pulau Satang Muara Tebas Sematan and Miri. Carbazole biphenyl dibenzofuran and dibenzothiophene were used as sole carbon sources during enrichment growth with artificial seawater medium ONR7a. A total of six isolates were successfully isolated. Accumulation of metabolites through appearance of colors in media was confirmed. Isolate designated MT01 and MT02 showed positive growth using biphenyl and dibenzothiophene as sole carbon source while isolates M01 M02 and M03 showed positive growth using biphenyl dibenzothiophene and carbazole. However isolate PS01 from Pulau Satang could only grow on biphenyl. All six isolates were characterized genetically by 16S ribosomal DNA sequence where PS01; MT01 and MT02; and M01 and M02 were identified as Thalassospira xiamenensis Thalassospira xianheensis and Thalassospira profundimaris respectively. Isolate M03 was identified as Pseudomonas pachasfrellae.
