Abstract

We sampled three sewage treatment plants STP1 2 and 3 that were located in a residential commercial and light-industrial area respectively. Heavy metal analysis showed Copper Cu and lead Pb pollution at STP3 that also affected its sludge volume and settleability. Using 16S rRNA PCR-DGGE we showed that the bacterial community structure were different among the STPs and there was a predominance of known heavy metal resistant bacteria at STP3. In order to determine the effects of heavy metal pollution towards bacterial community structure we used the canonical correspondence analysis and showed that there were two distinct groups of bacteria. The ecological distance of one group reflected the effects of both Cu and Pb pollution whereas another group mirrored the sludge volume.
