Abstract
The genus Aspergillus is known as common fungi abundantly present in various habitats and substrates such as in the indoor environment soils food feed and textiles like paper and wood. The members of the genus are also among one of the economically important fungi in food microbiology and medical microbiology. The tropical beaches in Malaysia are the ideal habitat for a variety of Aspergillus species. Therefore the study is conducted to gain knowledge on the population of Aspergillus species present in the tropical beach of Penang. The study involved the isolation and identification of Aspergillus species from beach soil sample of Batu Ferringhi beach. The direct isolation technique from soil particles was used to isolate Aspergillus from beach soil samples. Aspergillus isolates were identified through the observation of macroscopic and microscopic characteristics. Aspergillus niger is the most common species found in the beach soil sample which had the highest percentage of abundance 73.8. The percentage of abundance for other Aspergillus species are relatively low where Aspergillus terreus consist of 14.3 followed by Aspergillus japonicus 9.5 and Aspergillus flavus 2.4. The study on the diversity of Aspergillus species in beach soil samples of Batu Ferringhi will provide insight on the influence of environment on occurrence of Aspergillus in tropical beaches.
