(2011) Antimicrobial resistance of clinical isolates of Vibrio cholerae 01 serotype ogawa isolated during cholera outbreak in Limbang Sarawak Malaysia. [Proceedings Paper]
Abstract
This study was conducted to determine the antibiotic resistance patterns and antibiogram among clinical isolates of Vibrio cholera serotype Ogawa isolated from patients during the cholera outbreak in Limbang Sarawak. Isolated strains were identified following standard cultural morphological biochemical and serological agglutination tests. Selected V. cholerae 01 serotype Ogawa isolates were subjected to 11 antibiotics using disc diffusion method to test sensitivity. From a total of 24 clinical isolates only 21 isolateswere subjected for antibiotic testing. The isolates recorded 100 sensitivity to cephalothin nalidixic acid doxycycline and chloromphenicol. However clindamycin exhibited the highest number of resistance 62. Despite the low percentage of antibiotic resistance recorded in this study there is still an important need to continuously monitor the usage of antimicrobial agents in various industries as well as for cholera treatment.
