Abstract

A total of 17 bacterial isolates originating from Antarctic soil samples were regenerated for a few generations to obtain a stabilized growth period. Only five isolates which were D F 8 B1 and B4 were capable of growing in a standard incubation period of 5 to 7 days. These five isolates were screened for their lipase activity on olive oil agar tributyrin agar and palm oil agar. Furthermore they were tested for extracellular lipase production by using the disc diffusion method. Isolate D and F were selected for further studies based on their prompt lipase production and clear zones observed. Both isolates were suspected to be Antarctic yeasts based on their morphology.
