Janani Sarangan, . and Amsaveni Selvaraj, . (2011) Isolation and screening for antibiotic producing actinomycetes from Sungai Chongkak forest soil in Malaysia. [Proceedings Paper]
Abstract
Twenty five soil samples were collected from Sungai Chongkak recreational forest. The soil samples were maintained as two sets; calcium carbonate treated and untreated soil samples. A total number of 337 actinomycetes isolates with different morphology were isolated by subjecting all calcium carbonate treated and untreated soil samples. Based on the growth observation of all actinomycete cultures 42 fast-growing actinomycetes isolates were selected that were further screened for antimicrobial production by employing primary and secondary screening. Four bacteria such as Bacillus subtilis Staphylococcus aureus Salmonella sp. and Escherichia coli were used as test organisms to assess the antagonistic activity of the actinomycete cultures through primary and secondary screening. On primary screening using cross streak method. 13 actinomycete isolates were selected and further SUbjected for secondary screening using agar well diffusion assay. Six actinomycete cultures were found to express antibacterial activity in secondary screening.
