Abstract

The aim of the present study was to extract and screen for antimicrobial activity of extracts from Phaleria macrocarpa and three Shorea species. Extracts were prepared using methanol and were tested towards HSV-1 gram positive and gram negative bacteria. In general low antibacterial activity was observed among all four extracts. Highest activity was shown by Shorea macrophylla in which nearly all microorganisms used were inhibited. Cytotoxicity assay was also carried out for Phaleria macrocarpa and Shorea parvifolia extracts. The results showed that both plant extracts have low toxicity towards Vero cells with 2.48 mg/mL of extract Phaleria macrocarpa and 1.25 mg/mL of extract Shorea parvifolia.
