Abstract

Keratin is persistent in nature due to its rigid characteristics. In this study keratin can be biodegraded by a keratinolytic fungal isolate Microsporum gypseum. Degradation of keratin was observed with the inoculated chicken feathers under improved condition day 0 and cultivated chicken feathers at day 6 day 30 day 60 and day 100 through scanning electron microscope SEM. Samples were processed using freeze drying method before it was viewed under SEM. The Microsporum gypseum was isolated from the soil in a local poultry farm and was found capable of completely degrading chicken feathers. Its extracellular keratinase was useful in the hydrolysis of poultry feathers.
