Abstract

Bud-rot is the most important disease of the African oil palm Elaeis guineensis Jacq. in Latin America. It has become ubiquitous and severe in most countries of South and Central America since the mid 60;s to recent times with very few country exceptions. This paper covers the disease distribution the discussion of the possible biotic and abiotic causes of the disease the various names it has been given and the potential pre-disposing factors involved. Also covered are the commercial solutions available today along with their limitations. Lastly the author offers his thoughts on the future of oil palm in Latin America and the impact this disease could have on the rest of the oil palm world from the grower;s perspective.
