Abstract

Oil palm plantations are increasing very rapidly in Colombia so far there are about 450 OO0 ha planted in four different regions of the country. In these areas the insect problems are different and infest palm plantations in several ways as defoliators Stenoma cecropia Loxotoma elegans Leucothyreus femoratus Cephaloleia vagelineata Brassolis sophorae Opsiphanes invirae sucking insects Leptopharsa gibbicarina fruit pests Demotispa neivai stem borers Rhynchophorus palmarum Strategus aloeus root miners Sagalassa valida. But the most important insects are those involved in oil palm diseases such as Haplaxius Myndus crudus vector of Lethal Wilt R. palmarum which attack palms infected with bud rot and defoliators and sucking insects associated with Pestalotiopsis. Cenipalma has as strategy to preserve the natural biological control to minimise the effects of chemical control avoiding the surge of insects which generally are not considered pests of oil palm. Besides preservation of insect pollinator populations is very important in oil palm plantations. Colombian diversity in palm plantations is rich in beneficial fauna abounding many parasitoids predators and entomopathogenic organisms such as fungi virus and nematodes affecting insect pest populations. Intensive efforts are made with the cooperation of private laboratories to scale up the production of selected strains of entomopathogenic fungi Beauveria bassiana B. brongniarti Metarhizium anisopliae and Isaria Paecilomyces fumosorosea; insect viruses infecting Limacodidae defoliators entomo nematodes and insect parasitoids and predators such as Trichogramma and Chrysoperla species. These advances to establish an integrated pest management program based on biological control are discussed in this presentation.
