Abstract

Malaysia recognizes the importance of managing its valuable forest resources for sustainable economic benefits while ensuring environmental stability and conservation of biological diversity. In many instances such activities are limited by the inadequate amount of planting materials available. Studies have shown that among the factors attributed to the problem of seed supply are irregular and unpredictable fruiting cyclic mast fruiting which usually occurs once between 3 and 8 years and the recalcitrant nature of the seed. Vatica bella resak keluang is one of the 77 dipterocarp species listed as critically endangered CR in the IUCN list. For the past 10 years no seed have been collected although V. bella is grouped among the major commercial timbers. In an attempt to conserve this species shoot tips were subjected to cryopreservation via vitrification. It was found that with the pretreatment of 50 Plant Vitrification Solution 2 PVS2 cocktail 80 of shoot tips were able to survive storage in liquid nitrogen.
