Abstract

The Mukah-Dalat area of sarawak is the sago country of malaysia. There sago metroxylon sago rottb. Thrives in swampy environment providing food shelter fuel and commerce to the mainly melanau community. The center of diversity of sago is believed to in the irian-png-maluku region where there exist several species of metroxylon and a hundred or so local varieties. It is vegetatively propagated and an introduced crop in this part of west borneo. Its sub -populations in that region would have a narrow genetic base. Germplasm and agronomic trail plots have been laid out at sg talau peat research station dalat since 1983. For crop improvement mass selection based on trunk height circumference number of internodes at 1m trunk length has resulted in more than 150 palms potential palms been identified. Suckers obtained from these palms will be planted in several mother blocks for further evaluation on the second generation of palms. Selected provenances will be a source of suckers of superior planting materials.
